With this result, Botafogo broke a taboo of not having beaten América-MG as visitors in Serie A of the Brazilian Championship. Previously, Botafogo had only beaten Coelho away from home in a Serie B match in 2015.
Botafogo dominated the game from the start, even playing away from home, and opened the scoring in the 21st minute with a fine goal from Júnior Santos. América-MG scored a goal in the 38th minute, but Júnior Santos scored again four minutes into the second half to secure Botafogo's victory.
Playing at home, Grêmio were beaten 2-1 by Athletico-PR. With this defeat, Grêmio remain in 3rd place with 44 points, while Athletico-PR climb to 5th place with 44 points.
