Brazilian tennis player Beatriz Haddad Maia won the biggest title of her career this Sunday (29) in Zhuhai, China. She won the WTA Elite Trophy, a tournament that brings together the best tennis players outside the world's top-8. Beatriz, who occupies 19th place in the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) ranking, defeated Chinese Qinwen Zheng by 2 sets to 0, both defined in a tie-break.
This victory puts Beatriz Haddad Maia closer to the top-10 in the world rankings. In the next update, she will have an additional 700 points and rise to 11th position. The São Paulo tennis player's best finish in her career was tenth place, achieved in June, after reaching the semifinals of Roland Garros, one of the Grand Slams.
In addition to the singles title, Beatriz was also champion of the Elite Trophy doubles tournament, alongside Russian Veronika Kudermetova. In the final, they defeated Japan's Miyu Kato and Indonesia's Aldila Sutjiadi by 2 sets to 0.
Despite not gaining points in the WTA rankings, the victory in the doubles competition resulted in a bonus of US$ 55 thousand (around R$ 274 thousand) for the partnership. The singles title guaranteed Beatriz Haddad Maia a prize of US$ 605 thousand (around R$ 3.01 million), totaling US$ 632.5 thousand (around R$ 3.15 million) in prizes.
